I think your Howard Kossel like commentary yesterday about the UGF removal was outstanding. The whole walk thru was highly educational to me. I will not be using the UGF, thank u.
I am looking at a very big empty tank filled only with ideas right now. One good thing about ideas is that they are easier to remove then the real thing. I guess you figured that out and I appreciate you letting me learn from your f up.
On this topic though I am very curious to understand about the flow rate.
The manual I have for the EHEIM filter says the "content of the tank should be circulated and filtered 1 to 1 1/2 times per hour. Is player saying that the content should be filtered 25 times per hour for a perfect reef????? Is there that much of a difference between fresh and salt water needs??
Dfli, When you said you were going in to remove the UGF I thought for sure you would crash the tank... God bless ya.

Yes guys, freshwater tanks can get away with 1x I guess.
Marine tank definately need more. If you only have fish in your tank yo can get away with 10x. If you have corals or other inverts, you need 20 to 25x.
25x sounds like a crazy amount, but once you get it set up you will wonder how you ever had less. The fish food almost never stays on the sand... it just keeps floating around. The water stays crystal clear.
As far as running carbon filters: The carbon will only last 2 weeks in saltwater. My filters came with four pads... and replacing them would cost me around $64 a month... that is ridiculous for my budget. That is besides the point though. Most of the moderators here will even tell you that you shouldn'r run carbon 24/7 in a saltwater tank. Only use the carbon if the water gets cloudy or you need to remove some contaminant like the chemicals from a dead invert.
For my power filters I just took some ladies nylon stockings, filled them with live sand and plopped them into the power filter compartments. If you have extra live rock pieces (small ones) you can use those instead. You can theoretically use filter media in your filters, but you will have to rinse them daily or they are pointless. If you don't rinse them daily, the mechanical filtration becomes biological (which is why I skip all the rinsing and go straight to the nylon bags full of live sand).
I will let you do your own research on wet-dry filters, as everyone here knows my opinion on them, and some people actually get angry with me :p

heY treadmill(other name too hard) my water levels are in optimal shape and the system didnt crash. I WAS HOLDING MY BREATH ON THAT ONE!
it was doing so well i added a newcomer to my tank this evening. it is a skunk clown. he doesnt ahve the traditional white bars on his side hes got one that runs nose to tail along his "dorsal." or back he is awesome i got way antsy waiting during acclimation. well mud, im going to try the LS in the filter. it is a pain i have to swim over 100yds( i want the clean stuff) then i sift it and spray it with salt water to get the nudibranches (spelling) out of it they are every where out here, then i let it sit a bit and then i get to put it in. so ill try it out. any extra advice? man im in love with my new skunk. he has an awesome personality.
