new tank - coral/fish compatibility

i plan on setting up a 150g tank. i've been doing research on the subject prior to setting everything up. i've noticed that some fish are not reef safe. what exactly does this mean, what will happen if you include these fish in a reef system? unfortunately the sites i've looked at doen't really describe what can happen. are certain aspects of the reef safe, and others not? is it a matter of not including certain types of corals? i'm trying to find out if a situation can be set up in which a fish that is not considered reef safe, may be introduced into a system and coexist with out any problems. e.g. a fish i have read about is the clown trigger. can a clown trigger live in a reef system that has been specifically designed to reduce chance of problems? can someone please help me by describing problems that occur, fish to avoid (and reasons), and possible exceptions that can be made? thanks.

usally "not REEF safe" means the fish will wreck your corals by eating/nipping them.. and i dont know if they include that they chew on critters too (anyone else ? )
clown trigger is a know reef wrecker... niggers are a little more tame, but still have a tendancy to nip at corals and chase shrimp for dinner

From my understanding REEF SAFE means that certain fish will not eat, destroy, or disturb inverts, corals etc, in a reef sys. My suggestion is to get a book on fishes that will tell you if they are or not reef safe. Inverts,Corals etc can add up in $$$ and I think are a good investment. So you dont want anything to happen to them. I hope I've been some help good luck :)

Some people consider fish that eat shrimps/crabs, etc (like lionfish) as not reef safe. I guess it just depends on who you're talking to. Personally, when I think of "not reef safe" I think of corallivores like angels and butterflies. But, thats just me.
I'd also reccommend Marine Fishes by Scott Michael. It's a good base guide on what fish do what to whom.
