I’m getting into setting up a new saltwater tank I have a 30 gallon with a 10 gallon sump/refugium I plan on making.
I have the Current USA Nova Extreme T5 Aquarium Lighting Fixture, 4X39 Watt, 36 inch
Which will give me about 5 watts / gallon
A Cora life Super Skimmer Protein Skimmer for tanks up to 65 gallons
Which can be placed in the sump or hang on the back.
I going to buy like 35 or more pounds of live rock 40-50 pounds of live sand depending on my set up
For both my tank and sump/refugium
I’m still looking into a overflow boxes a return pump that doesn’t require a lot of foot room and salt.
Also a good starter test kit that would also be good for cycling
I have a few questions
what are good salts and things I will need to start my tank?
Is there any benefit to having your protein skimmer in the sump or hang on the back
Any good overflow boxes or set ups
And really just any helpful suggestions

Also im limited to space due to my stand so i only have the 10 gallon it would also help to have my skimmer hang on the outside of my tank. leading to my next question is there any benifit to having your skimmer in the sump or hangin on the back.
This is how i would like to have it set up one of these ways which way would be bettter
A
Having the intake where the skimmer is overflow to the refugium the on to the live rock area then a bubble trap to the return
B
having the intake come to the live rock area on the the refugium then the skimmer to a bubble trap to return

Sump is usually preferable for two reasons I can think of:
1. Inlet water quality - The water coming out of your sump is the cleanest in the tank. Sending that into your skimmer is good, because the skimmer doesn't have to filter through the other junk to weed out the organics.
2. Aesthetics - Its vain, but the less equipment you see, the better.
BTW, good looking setup. You did your homework.

Hey thanks thats what I was told if you know what you want do your homework and spend the extra cash from the start up so you dont end up wasting money in the long run?

So I will prolly put the skimmer right in the tank. So which set up do you guys think wil be better?
A
Having the inlet come to the skimmer area?
B
Or having the inlet come to the live rock area then so on ?
First picture with gray background is A
and all white and black on is B
Thanks
I will post pics as soon as i get the rock and the tank cycling

Have your skimmer inlet as close to the return pump as possible, so its getting the 'clean' water. Have the outlet near your drain line, so that any water it skims, its sending back through the filter again.

I actually have a used overflow box and drain line that was replaced by drilling my tank. I'm pretty sure that it's rated for 600 GPH. It comes with the small water pump to help hold the syphon. Most overflows run north of $50 - $75. Right now it's just sitting around my place so I'm sure that we could negotiate a good price - PM me if you are interested in it - I can post some pics tomorrow.
I use red sea salt - probably not the best, but I think it is better than the other stuff my LFS sells.
I also use the basic Aquarium Pharm. test kits - Amm, NO2, NO3, pH - then dip strips for alk

Careful here braydonosu, the site now frowns on selling in the forum. Selling needs to be done from the auction site above.

Lame - what is so different about me telling him that I will sell him some equipment that swf does not sell and people commenting about selling/trading corals (which swf does sell) with each other. Not hijacking here - just a question for the all powerful Mods.

My suggestion is this,If you can put the Coralife SS 65 in the sump put it in the sump. All of the Coralife skimmers have a tendency to overflow. They arent bad skimmers they are just finicky and prone to overflow at anytime.
As for salt...everyone here has a opinion on salts,i would only say unless you plan on doing fish only i would not use Instant Ocean.

good design. looks alot like what Im doing myself. My only comment is there is only bubble traps on one side.
consider having bubble traps on both sides.
