New Tank/Water Changes and Diatoms question

When I do water changes in my new tank which currently has diatoms growing on the substrate and some of the live rock, should I be attempting to remove the diatoms or leave it alone? To get rid of it I was thinking of using a toothbrush on the LR and then siphoning it out with the water change. Is this good to do, or should I leave the diatoms alone?
