i live near the coast and was wondering if i could use sand and water from the gulf to start a tank?it would be live sand wouldnt it?say fill a few 5 gallon buckets w/ wet sand from the surf?

There is no better water on the planet than natural salt water from a clean un polluted source. The live natural surf sand would be ideal as well,, but you better check with fish, wildlife and game on legality.

You most certainly can. I would be carefull of where you get it from though. You don't want polluted water or sand.

The smallest lion is a Fu Manchu, but ONLY get one if it is eating frozen at the LFS, even then they are iffy. Go with a fuzzy or a zebra dwarf for a smaller lion. They should not be housed in anything under a 45-55 gallon tank. The zebra grows to over seven inches. The fuzzy stays around 5 1/2-6 inches.

As for the lion, go with the fuzzy. This is a good 6-8 months off or more. They need an established tank. Here is a pic of mine. (mind you that my tank is almost two years old and I just got him a few months ago). He is a cute little guy though and is growing VERY fast!
