Looks great! very nice workmanship :D I noticed in the pic "tank ready to paint" what appear to be legs on the stand. Did those just hold it up to paint or did you leave them on? If you left them on what are they made of? The don't look like they could support 2,000 pounds?
Again, very nice work!

Your tank stand /hood looks really good.
1 ? I see that the hood is hinged in one piece
for the lights, but is the front panel seperate on the hood.
thanks good luck

hey mandarin,
Thanks for the comment, no those arre not legs they are just to keep the unit off the ground while i paint it. Actually the base is made just like you would frame a flooring system with rim joist and joists.
And new fish, I think I understand the question, yes the front of the hood is hinged on top about 6" back and secured with a 72" piano hinge. the lid kind of looks like an upside down L

What kind of lighting setup are you using? The color looks great! I'm going to build my own, and am looking for ideas.
Thanks

thefaint,
I am using 2 vho tubes 72" long and 2- 250watt 10,000k bulbs and I installed one fan on the end to keep it all cool. the lights are about 12" off the water with no glass lid

amoros, what is creating the blue light, are those both actinic's? how much did this setup ending up costing you alltogether? I'm looking into doing very similar for my 55g, 48in long. what would you recommend for my 55g

Fantastic job!! I really like the canopy idea. I've do a 7' drop ceiling in my basement which doesn't allow me to open my canopy fully. Your idea is close to what I was thinking of building and I think I like your implemention better!!
Enjoy!

thefaint, yes the blue is comming from the two actinic bulbs and the two 250 halides do have a little blue at 10,000 k. Your 55 IMOP will do great with 2VHO 48"actinic bulbs and 2 175 watt halides at 10,000k. I hope this helps.
Alex
P.s. these lights will produce some heat so when you are designing your hood allow room for ventilation and possibly a fan (just 1) to help move the air

amoros,
I just got off the phone with the fish store here in town. Asked him about all of this, and he said that running MH on my 55g, would probably be too hot of a setup. He said the only way would be to run pendants. He suggested an icecap ballast running 3 vho's and one no actinic, for my setup, I really want the blue light though. Let me know what you think.

On your 55, you could run 4 VHO 46.5" bulbs on an Icecap 660. Mix the bulbs between actinic, daylight or 50/50 and you will have a great looking tank, not to metion really good lighting.

if i run 4 bulbs on a icecap ballast, then can i run the actinics on a seperate timer? or does the ballast control all 4, in other words when you turn it on, all 4 must turn on at the same time, and all 4 must shut off at the same time. the reason i ask this, is because i want to simulate sunrise, and sunset on just actinic lamps.
