I read your site.
I was very helpful!
When you say hold out for southdown you mean carisea is not better than southdown?

so i need to make a fill line on my tank to see when it has evaporated?

In my tank I have two items that I use to judget the level of the water. There's a line in my heater and at the top of one of my powerheads. I put new water in to get the level back up to the lines. I didn't actually draw a line anywhere on the tank.

since your in va you have a decent chance of finding southdown/old castle playsand...here is the info hd needs to search for it in there computers:
SKU # 578-819
UPC # 0-210026-16865-5
Model # 420-100
it's generally in the gardening dept. (at least in no. va)
it's a clear bag with blue and red and it should say "from the carribean" on the front (if i remember right)...actually i think kips link above has a picture...
as far as the LR situation...even if you don't want a tank filled with lr i would still sugget getting some...some fish will get stressed if they don't have any hidding places and stress can lead to desease....just something to keep in mind.
anyway good luck....

IMO...
...i would get rock, if not live rock, just plain base rock would work. just so your fish dont get stressed out as stated b4. But to me, lr is very good to have and makes your tank look very natural. And also...if u do buy any lr, i would get cured. Just because u dont have to cure it (put it in and cycle tank with shrimp) just a little easier? And u could always mix the 2. Buy most base rock (however much it is u want) and just put a couple peices of lr to top it off. This way u have places for fish to hide and also have a natural filtration, and mayB even some cool little critters from the lr.
But i might B wrong? sorry to confuse u if i am :D
good luck, andy

Or you in norfolk va. or northern va or what?
I have been having a problem getting this sand and it really holding my process up because it does have to be in the tank before I put fish in there is that correct? If I dont have a choice It look like i am going to have to pay for caribea sand. How much does that usually run a bag anyone?

okay I will try them
I emailed him about that southdown
So what you have found is that no home depot has it here?
It seems strange that they would sell a product and you couldn't get it from them offline.
And I cant seem to find even the southdown company nowhere one line.

Briggs, What kind of price do you think I can get a 90 gallon for? Anything less than $240 for the bare tank itself?

Lbg- it looks like your getting everything under control and learning all about fish keeping. About the live rock, I would get it. For my tank when I set it up, I put both base lace rock on the bottom and then pieces of fiji live rock on top. I like the live rock because it has good algaes and little organiisms to help clean the tank.
When you are looking into adding some fish, please please ask here before buying it. Fish stores will sometimes tell you anything to buy an expensive fish, that just won't work for your tank. Many lfs suggest damsels, I wouldn't because many of them can become quite aggressive when mature. Look up the fish that you like and then ask here for if they are all compatible too. I hope you tank goes well and you have fun in the process.

Okay so sand from the beach is out!
I have been looking at people here tanks and I notice that som people tank look like two layer dark sand and light sand. What is the difference in sands. Which is which?
What problem did you have with regular play sand other than south down?
And I have nothing in my tank today but tap water and salt. I just took those blue rocks out last night. Do i still need to be running my filter?
I am glad I took those rocks out to some of them have turned white. So you know where the blue is at. (in the water)
