As stated, I've just opened a e.b.a.y. account and don't know jack about it. I know people on here use it so I need some info on safe buying and the whole paypal thing. Tell me your experiences shopping on the big auction site. I'm hoping to find some good deals but don't want to get screwed. Give me some advice, guys. Thanks.

a few of my personal rules:
don't buy anything that doesn't ship out within a week. magazine subscriptions that say you'll get the first issue in 6-8months are bs.
don't buy gift cards. if the store thinks it's stolen returns they will investigate and cancel the return card which could take a month or two.
insure everything for more than it's worth to you.
keep in mind that sellers will often use ---- quickpics rather than taking their own pictures of the actual item.
i look for books based on isbn items. a couple times i've been shipped old versions of scientific manuals where dating is important to me.
DON'T BE AFRAID TO LEAVE BAD FEEDBACK!!!

Along with leaving bad feedback, make sure you check the comments left in the sellers feedback from other people that have bought from them. I did more selling than buying on there, but I have bought stuff on there, including 5 tanks a 55 (my salt tank) with stand, 2 -20's a 10 and a 5 all for $75 I had to pick it up, but it was only like 2 hours away and this was before the gas spike, so it was well worth it

and communicate.
sometimes things go sour, or bad timing happens.
most problems can be avoided and or worked out just by communicating.
i had somebody back out of an item of mine due to bad timing. he was willing to pay the ---- seller fees, and any paypal fee, so i agreed.
i did not report him, and i relisted the item, which sold.
no harm, no foul
dont go into eb@y with a hard head and stern approach.

Good info, guys! One more question, how do you set up a seperate paypal account so it's not connected to my checking or anything? I read something about on the paypal website and I know I need to set limits on my spending so it's better not to have it hooked into my main money, lol.

Just be cautious & check out people feedback & if it's to good to be true, than it probally is. ---- is great, but you don't want to get ripped. If you get an email that looks like it is from an ---- member, but it is not in your ---- inbox DO NOT reply. This lets a hacker get into your account. It happened to me once, fortunately ---- caught it before they could do anything.

Very very true, you have to remember sometimes things can happen. For instance when I had my ---- store I kept items listed in it. If I didn't have it in stock, then my wholesale guys or the manufacturer would ship it straight out to my customer. Well one day a guy bought a $1500 suspension lift kit. I didn't have it in stock & the manufacturer had them on backorder for like 3-4 weeks. :scared: So I immediately contacted the guy awaring him of the situation, at first he just wanted to keep it on order since it was a good deal. A few days later though he found it in stock somehweres else for the same price, so he wanted to cancel it which I couldn't blame him for wanting to do so. He was very understanding though & he even agreed to file a report with ---- where we both agreed not to do business so I got my money back.
And the ---- fee is a lot for something $1500 with a store. Nice guy though.

The Paypal protection for buyers/sellers is a myth. Paypal is owned by e-bay and does not have to follow banking regs. You have more protection as a buyer using your credit card then you do using Paypal. The only party afforded any level of protection is Paypal.
Read the Paypal user agreement .
As for e-bay...they have a HORRIBLE record policing their site.
