oh....... and I don't personally know ANY 30g tank that has a temper...... Lol.... drilled even

I think if the tank wasn't already set up, drilled would be the best way to go, adding water volume, especially to a smaller tank is almost always a plus. Since the tank is already set up, I don't know if I'd go through the hassle of emptying it, etc and restarting the whole process, especially if it already has sand. If it's really new into the cycle (less than 3 weeks/hasn't spiked yet), I would be more inclined to think about dumping everything out and drilling the tank.

I have to agree, even tho it wouldn't be that difficult in putting the water in a new 36 gallon bin with the sand and putting in the heater and a power head to keep the cycle going while drilling the tank.
the water should continue to cycle in the bin but once put back into the tank, the water is going to be cloudy for a couple of days.

Not to mention (since it won't just let me edit and add this to my last post):
If the OP is looking to ultimately increase water volume and have a sump, there are some great hang on overflows out there. I personally really like the CPR series, they're slimmer than most others and work well. If we're afraid of overflow, we're not talking a significant amount of water here in all reality, I think it would be the easier (and IMO smarter) option.

Just out of curiosity why do you want to drill a 30g tank?
