ckk, no need to remove the shrimp. Just let it be and get nasty. Keep checking your ammn/trite/trate levels and make sure you're at 0 for ammn/trite.
JMO on the barebottom, I've seen several tanks with "star board" on the bottom and I can not see any advantage. With a CC or barebottom tank you must keep it clean yourself. This is just more maintenance for you to do on your tank. A sand bottom is not a death trap IMHO, I keep a good clean-up crew that does the work for me and every now and then give sections a little stir. Like crimzy said (
) there is no money saving b/c you still need good bio-filtration somewhere along the line whether its LR or LS. Besides I would miss all the cool critters that like the sand!
I would STRONGLY suggest a skimmer no matter which way you go!

The term Live in live rock means that there is bacteria present that break down the waste from the fish. This is the start of your nitrogen cycle. Also at night hwne the lights are off there probably some hitch hikers that you can't see in the light. So basically LR looks like rock and thats it.
Is this what you mean?

Its fine, just keep testing the water and wait to add livestock until the AMMN/TRITE are at 0.
No worries you'll get there it takes time and patience. The only thing that happens quickly in this hobby are major issues. You don't want to go there.
Your Welcome! Keep um coming!

NO!!! :scared:
Don't do what I did to my first tank, I was in such a rush to see all of the fish in it (as I am sure you are), I bought all of these "cycling aids" and everything - it just wound put becoming a big problem later on, lost all of my fish.
Trust me - take it slow!
There is nothing worse that flushing a $100 fish down the toilet because you wanted to rush things

No need to remove the prawns, they will just decay and go away. set temp at 77-82 and leave it. SW8 is exactly right! Slow down it will all happen in time. I know its tough but wait it out.
