Sorry but your notgoing to be able to get away with anything that hangs on the tank . The size of tank and the bio load would be a little too much for anything thats hang on back .

you would have to either buy a large wet/dry filter or make your own. If your new at it then i would suggest buying one. Your also gonna need a pretty big protein skimmer.

i have never had any experience with this skimmer and i havent heard anyone talk about it..But from what i see it looks like it could be good for ur tank. Maybe someone else on the forum can be more helpful.

this is the skimmer I'm using in my sump and it works great . I have absolutly no complantes about it . Its always pulling out brown sludge . I have a tendency to over feed and this keeps my water perfect. as far as a sump goes you'll find a goodselection over in the DIY.

your equiptment for a 180 is going to cost you ALOT of money, so my suggestion is dont skimp out and make sure you get some good stuff! My 220 just keeps going on cost, dont think it will ever stop either!!! a good wet/dry will cost you about $3-400 bucks,,and then you gotta buy some big pumps to run it ..iwaki, little giant etc. are all good "bigger" pumps about 400+ bucks for a pump(s), and a good skimmer will run about $200 bucks give or take .. . Since you said you were new i didnt know if you knew the cost of initial startup, so basically just go for the gold!! and ENJOY!

This is the truth . if you buy cheep you will only end up paying twice for what you need . once for cheep junk and the second time for the good stuff . better to break the budget and get good reliable equipment .

you could still save alot of money by buying previously owned equipment. word of advice if you find something you think would be a good deal do some research on the product and know if its the right thing for your tank .nothing worse than buying even used equipment and finding out its useless for your needs.some LFS do sell used equipment that was put in as a trade or on consignment for there clients at a good price
