its about time right, after years getting hydrometers checked and rechecked and throwing them away, I finally bought a refractometer.
I'm excited. it just came in today.

its all calibrated. turns out my current hydrometer was off just enough to be potentially dangerous. fortunatly since I run my Sg so high I was still in the clear but I was lower than I should be.

Congrats, I'm sure you will get plenty of use out of it. I was surprised though, my Hydrometer, every time I compare them, is only off .001 from the refractometer on the low side. Have a good one.

Nice, looks like they redesigned the hinge/lens. Is the hinge rear-mounted now? (like a traditional car hood).
The old style was like a "clam-shell" and I broke mine putting it down. The lens dropped down and I guinso'ed it right off.

believe it or not the one in your picture is the "new design" the changed it to front hinged, which is why I bought the older model I was afraid of doing what you just mentioned happened. it cost me 20 dollars more than the newer design but worth it IMO, this model RHS-10atc is also claimed accurate plus or minus 0.10% whereas the other model the RHS28/atc has a large span of reading but also a slightly larger margin of error plus or minus 0.20%.
yours looks like the RHSN (the N stands for New model)

crazy aint it? I have always used hydrometers, just had them calibrated by friends with refractometers, but I'm sick of chasing some one down and remembering to get it checked. especially with more tanks up and coming I want to be as dead on as possible in every way.

Good deal, mine looks the same but I dont think it is. Did yours come with calibrating fluid? Mine says ATC on it which I believe means automatic temperature control.

mine did not come with calibrating fluid, I used distilled water (like the instructions said to). BUT when I get over to the university next I am going to calibrate it against theirs to double check it. then double check that against a water of known Salinity, just to be sure.
ATC= automatic temperature compensation
according to the manufacturer, ATC refractometers should be calibrated at 68 degrees farenheight, and recalibrated each time the working room temperature varies more than 5 degrees.
