I just got a new 80g sw tank. what should i do for the initial fill as far as temperature and salt content? also, i was told that it would be smart to just keep coral or something in there for the first couple weeks to make sure everything is right...is that correct? i'm most concerned about the start up of this and the salt cont. / temp. please help..thanks

i dont know it this makes a difference but it's not a "new" system. its new to me but i bought it used from someone that had it running for over a year with no problems.

No, this is not correct. Corals are very sensitive.
Tell us more about the tank. Amount of substrate, rock, etc.

i have a good amount of honeycomb rock to go in the tank and...i'm not entirely sure what you mean by amount of substrate. the tank itself is just an 80g w/ simple gravel and honeycomb rock. the tank is empty right now

If the tank is empty, are the former inhabitants and materials (water, rock, livestock, etc) in maintained storage waiting for you to add them, or not available to you at all?
If you're just getting the hardware, then you'll essentially be starting from scratch, just as if you bought the components new. Take Teresa's advice, the three secrets of successful aquarium is research, research, and more research.
Actually I lied . . . there's six secrets with the other three being patience, patience, and more patience.
