They are not going to stop making bulbs for the straight pin or square. Whatever some LFS told you is nothing more than some silly rumor. There are too many units that still need that type of bulb and as long as there is a market they will sell the bulbs.

BTW the word is dire, not dyer.
Unless you're looking for someone to dye your light fixture for you.
And if you're REALLY that desperate to change bulb types, can't you just buy new sockets? Cut off the square-pin sockets, rewire with straight pin sockets, and buy straight pin bulbs.
Really that sounds silly tho. the square pin bulbs are NOT going off the market anytime soon. Even if they stopped making them TODAY they would be around for another year or two. I think that LFS guy of yours was just talkin' outta his ***

or maybe he is trying to sell what he stocks. Since you did not have any punctuation finishing your sentence, I figured I would.

Honestly, the best person to ask on here would be SCSI. He's the electrician among us. If I was going to try this I'd probably PM and get his thoughts first.

Change the bulb, no. But if your fixture uses a certain kind of pin, wouldn't it be easier to just buy the same pin type rather than modify your fixture?

straight or square pin endcaps are readily available at hellolights or egay for about $4-5. you simply swap out one for the other.
