Well I run a phosban reactor full of the stuff 24x7 and I've got coraline growth.
Are you running a FOWLR or a reef? If you are running a FOWLR you probably aren't maintaining calcium, but you need to if you want coraline.

I used to run carbon but now I only run Purigen (by seachem) in my tanks unless there is a problem (sudden toxic coral damage, death of an extrely large critter etc.) then i will throw fresh labrotory grade carbon in to assist in removal of toxins. (I use the lab grade carbon for my future wifes goldfish tank) which I appear to be all out of at the moment.

I haven't run any carbon on our new 75 set that has been running since 3/31/2008 and I'm starting to see coraline growth already. I do have a filter sock ready and I'm going to run some carbon for the weekend.

Beware of cheap carbon, its pretty much exhausted after a couple of days. Purigen, like reefkprZ uses is an excellent product, like everything Seachem makes, IMO. I've used Boyd's Chemi Pure or Purigen for years in every tank I've had ChemiPure is carbon based and it seems to do an excellent job; although its hard to quantify.
