Newbie Coral Questions

Hi
I've only recently been informed about 'coral wars' by my LFS expert. I'm no where near starting a tank, just learning and learning and learning, since it's something my boyfriend & I would like to do when we get new, much more permanent place. I was wondering if someone could direct me to a post on here or another informative website that could tell me more about this. Very interesting.
Also, while browsing through the corals on SWF.com I read this:
Most "Hard Corals" should not be placed within reach of another coral.

What exactly does this mean?
:help:

good thing you do your learning before start out.
I would direct you to this forum. It's very helpful. Learn to use the Search key engine, you will most certainly find any lil pieces of information that you ever doubt about this hobby.
And buy a good book about SW aquarium. Read them good, and go back here and search and ask and you will have a very good start.
Corals can sting others and kill other species. That's why all corals need to be placed at reasonable proximity.

A lot of corals like toadstools wage chemical warfare by dumping toxins into the water to kill nearby corals, some like frogspawn reach out with their tentacles and sting nearby stuff to keep room for them to grow clear, other corals like zoas overgrow and shade out other corals. depends on the coral as to what type of warfare it engages but be sure everytype of coral has a different trick to help its survival, if you put a montipora within reach of a frogspawn, you end up with one dead montipora. I have actually seen one of my palythoa rip a stingtentacle off my frogspawn and eat it, I have also seen my frogspawn sting a mushroom to death, they sting by firing nematocysts
(Nematocyst: Intracellular stinging capsule, which possesses a thick double wall that encloses a tubule of varying construction and armature. There are at least 25 types of nematocysts within Phylum Cnidaria, grouped into three or four functional groups (Kass-Simon and Scappaticci, 2002). Six types are found in Anthozoa, two of which are exclusive to the class. Nematocysts are a type of cnida; the defining feature of the Phylum Cnidaria.)
hope this helps a bit.

I saw one of my Button Polyp swallow my poor little detached mushroom alive.
Corals are very mean to other corals.

So is it just that corals should be given adequate space, or are there some corals that absolutely should never be placed in the same tank together? Provided they're not on top of each other, is it safe to say corals can be mixed?
They're such fascinating organisms. lol.
