how much LS and LR do i need for a 55 gal tank? what kind of lighting do i need? i have 2 hang on filters one has bio wheel and 1 power head. what else do i need im trying to fix all my mistakes i made.
Somewhere between 1 and 2 lbs of rock per gallon is probably average, but it's up to you how much you want to add, depending on how open you want the tank. As for lighting, what inverts are you planning on keeping? If it's a fish-only tank, then the cheapo Normal Output (NO) lights will be fine. If you want to keeps corals or other photosynthetic inverts, you need to get better lighting. You can read about lighting HERE. An inch or two of sand is fine. Powerheads and a heater are a must. Other equipment, like a skimmer, will depend on what you want to keep.
i was wanting to add atleast 50 lbs of LR. As for the sand about how many pounds would that be? I wanting a reef tank so i would like go with the meatl halide if i can afford it or would the T5 lighting work? How many power heads do i need and what GPH do they need to be. Where would be the best place to buy EVERYTHING at cause my local pet store aint that great!
We can't post links to other sites here on the board, so you're going to have to look around. If I were you, I'd get a few books and do some serious reading before buying anything. A couple of really good ones are The Conscientious Marine Aquarist by Robbert Fenner, and The New Marine Aquarium by Michael Paletta.
30 kilo sand ( many views here where to get it what kinds of sand live sand totally or seeding live sand . . . ) you can usually buy from any LFS in 9 kilo bags.
LR. See if you can buy some base rock its MUCH cheaper. I would say 13-18 kilos base rock. then order a full box of live rock ( 30 kilo or so many places will give you better price if you buy whole box)
T5 is good stuff , try to find ones with individual reflectors per bulb i would say 4+ bulbs for your tank.
Filtration. . . .I REALLY suggest a sump/ fuge running rubble and some assortment of macro algaes( not a bit fan of grape calurpa though) I run 2100 LPH pump for my sump.
BTW this is just my pref/ setup ideas. research in books and from views of other reefers and find what works best for you ( don't forget test kits )
