a 12 gallon nano cube is going to really limit what kind and how many fish you can keep.
for a stater tank i would go with the larger tank because they are more stable. but if that is all you have room for good luck.
and the best way to get you fish cycled is not by putting a fish into the tank after setup. most people find it easiest to just put a cocktail shrimp into the tank.

You can do a 12g but it makes it little more challenging because you are limited on the amount of space you have for biological filtration specifically anaerobic bacteria the end part of the nitrogen cycle that converts nitrate to nitrogen gas. Also any mistakes are greatly magnified in a small tank, if I evaporate a gallon of water out of my 70g system big deal, evaporate a gallon out of a 12g and you have a potentially serious situation that could kill all of your inverts. I recommend running as large of tank that you have room for and your wallet can support so if all you have room for is a 12g than go for it just be sure you do the research so you know what you are getting into.
