Sorry to mislead, I feel like a newbie since I'm just now getting back into it.
As someone mentioned earlier all of my equip is out dated, used and beat up. So I wanna start fresh piece by piece. I would like to start with the filtration first, skimmer and then lighting last as I fear that will cost the most.
thanks for the help!
Here's my advice.
1. Get an overflow box from here: http://www.glass-holes.com. Drill your tank and get rid of that HOB overflow.
2. Buy a 30 gallon "long" glass tank . This will be the sump. Throw away that wet/dry and other compartment.
3. Live rock will be your filtration.
4. Buy a NICE skimmer for the sump.
Don't like the look of power heads?
5. Buy return kits from glass-holes.com and drill your returns.
I can go on...

this hobbie can be as simple or crazy over the top as you let it.
you really dont need a whole ton of stuff to have a healthy tank.
you will see calcium reactors ,carbon phosphate remover,t5 ,mh lights, etc.
a basic tank to learn off of:
tank (of course)
sump (which is the way to go now-a-days.go to melevsreef.com to see some pics of simple diy'er sumps.
find a skimmer -you could find one for around $150 brand new on the bay site.
all i have on my 225 fish tank is a sump with 3 sections ,one the fuge with only live rock rubble,2nd the skimmer, and third the pump for the tank.
i have lr in the dt and thats it.i do run a simple two little fishes phosphate reactor.( dont let the reactor word make you think it high teck its just a tube filled with media to absorb phosphates.
i have 4 #4 koralia pumps to add to flow.
my tank runs perfect water.
my 90 reef has just alot of lr in the dt a 30 gallon sump with alot more lr rubble and another phosphate reactor no skimmer.(havnt gotten around to getting one for the last 4 yrs.)
dont get caught up in you need this or you need that thing.
the best way to keep a salt tank is tank maturity meaning add things slow.
the tank will take care of itself as long as you dont rock the boat too fast.
by the way thanks for serving our country.
