Which protein skimmer should I get?
I have just purchased a 140 oceanic reef ready and I am confused on which brand protein skimmer is better than the other?
Do I need a protein skimmer w/ FOWLR tank?
AquaC ev 180
Berlin Classic/Berlin Turbo venturi driven protein skimmer
or any other ones out there?
:)

ETSS makes a good skimmer but can be expensive.
I have been reading alot about the Kent Nautilus Skimmer and alot of people say for skimmer in that price range it is the best.

The Aqua c EV 180. Bullet proof from what all I've read. But your looking at about $350- $400 Then if you add a Amp master 2700 pump to it chalk up another $230.

that skimmer uses a 2700? sheesh thats power hungry! you sure it doesn't call for a rio 2700 instead maybe?

Yeah, that probably is a little much. I think the Amp master 2100 would be suffice for a skimmer. I was told 6x tank turn over for that skimmer and that with the amp master pump you can't go wrong with it's efficency. It's pricy as hell but in the long run It's one of the most reliable pumps on the market with a 9 year warantee and less than 1 amp power consumption.

This was the pump info sent to me:
The (Aqua Seas Series Amp Masters) Aquarium pumps are superior, they only require 1 1/2 amps to operate, (the same as a light bulb) they run cool, with no heat transference. We tested a AMP MASTER on a 60 gallon vat and the water lost 4 degrees In a 48 hour test, pumping 3000 gallons per hour. And because of there perfectly balanced shaft and wet chamber they are able to use life time bearings and seals, so they can give you a 9 year extended warranty. you can not even feel or hear them run. And they will run dry without burning up. They are double In price, but they will pay for themselves just from the operating cost alone.

Recommended Pumps from there web page for the AquaC EV180
• Sen 700
• Mag 700
• Rio 3100
• Dolphin DP-800 (valve recommended)
• Iwaki 20 RLT
• Little Giant 3 MDQ
hope this helps:)

I use ETSS skimmers and like them I have the 800 pro on my 150 gallon and a reefdevil on my 55 gallon euro-reef makes really good ones too

I've read good things about ETSS also. The information I got about the pumps & skimmers was not from the Aqua C website. But, from a company that builds reef tanks. I guess out of trial and error they are sold on the Amp master series pumps for what sounds like longevity and power consumption. I guess it depends a lot on the tank size, head pressure & the size of your pocket book.
