Ok iv had a salt tank for about 7 mounths and i got the mudfilter and the lights and stuff and everything seems to be doing great but what is a protein skimmer???? im confused... and about lights im thinking of adding 2 small floresent blacklights or somtihng like that they look like black lights to my tank my local fish store has them and everything looks better the colors on fish and corals.. i got a 55gal tank what wattage would be good for them....?

A protein skimmer is another type of filter. It removes proteins and other goo from you tank. Some people believe they are a must have. I have ran my saltwater tanks without them but just ordered one for my 75 gallon.

Depends really on which way you want to go. I've been running my FO tank for almost a year without a protein skimmer with good results. No disease or deaths, levels all suprisingly good. However, i do have a protein skimmer on my 55 gal to *hopefully* ensure i keep flawless water conditions for corals & less-hardy fish. From everything i've read, most people swear by 'em, some people don't even bother. I don't think the addition of one is any excuse not to keep regular maintenance on the tank, but would definitely not hurt if you have the $$ to drop on one. You can probably search the posts on the BB for protein skimmers and find MANY MANY arguements on which are the best & their overall use.
