newbie questions

I'm am currently converting my freshwater tank into a saltwater tank. I have decided to use live rock with a protein skimmer on a 55 g tank.
My questions are:
What other forms of filtration should I use?
What kind of rock would function best as base rock?

What type of marine tank are you planning? The filtration requirements for a reef are usually different than for a fish only.

Another good idea would be to add some type of sand substrate. I hope you have considered the fact that your fresh water pebbles will not sufice in a saltwater tank. Many fish use the sandy bottom as a refuge of food source so it is very important for a lot of different systems.

I have considered a 50 50 mixture of sand. I'm going to start off with a fowlr setup and upgrade later on to coral
