I don't really know much about botany, but I wouldn't add anything to the water but the vitamins that they provided. That is what I do, and my plants grew very fast.
I wasn't planning on adding anything. Did you really thin them out once they sprouted? I feel bad killing them.

Yes, because the weaker plants will take away nutrients from the stronger plants, or with the herb garden, the Basil will take over and you won't have enough space or nutrients to support the other herbs. The Tomato plants get huge and if you don't thin them out and keep them trimmed they will take over your aerogarden.
