Nitrate filters

Ok here goes. Someone here asked a question about nitrate filters and how good do they work? I replied at that time, that I was going to get one and would get back to them and let them know just how good they are.
Well the one that I have is made by (Ultralife Reef Products). After a 3 month brake in period it (kept) the nitrate level reading at zero. After the filter has removed all levels of nitrate out of the reef tank the only thing you should do once a month is drop in a small feeding pill into the filter to feed the nitrate eating bacteria. Its as simple as that.
I have been using the filter for 9 months now with (on accumulated nitrate levels). With on accumulated nitrate levels I do not have any problems what soever with hair algae or brown algae red algae etc.growing in my reef at all. The macroalgae has taking over and my tank has been growing like crazy.
The only problem with the nitrate filter is some corals need a small source of nitrare and you will (not be able to keep) these types of corals in a reef tank that is using this type of filter to remove nitrate. Other wise there are on problems.
The filter can hang on the back of your sump however I placed my filter on the back of my tank to maintain easy control. The filter has had not one problem in 9 month's (at all). To prevent the build up of high levele of nitrate I now recommend them. Quite frankly I love it.
I hope my research into the nitrate filters have helped you.

I am very interested in this, Terry. Please give me the name and manufacture of this filter, and any online links, if you have any.
Thanks.
Also, what were your pre-filter nitrate readings?

You say they prevent high levels, but will it bring already high levels down. Sorry this sounds like a dumb question, but I'm a little fuzzy on this one. And how much $$$$ was it.

Hi Beth and Kris. Yes a nitrate filter will bring already high levels of nitrate down.
Before I had a nitrate filter my reading
were as high as 40ppm. I could NOT keep my nitrate reading below 20ppm.
When I installed the filter my reading were around 40ppm to 30ppm. As you know if nitrate levels are higher than 20ppm in a tank it can weakens and stress fish and kill corals.
A good friend of mine has had a nitrate filter on his reef for 2 years now. That is how I know about them. They really do work.
The name of the filter I have is (neutralizer 300 Deluxe) the manufacture of the filter, is (Ultralife Reef Products). It was around $480.00 however there are some out there alot less. I saw one on the internet a short time ago some were for $190.00.
Hope this helps.
Terry.

Hi salty. As I said, before you can get a good nitrate filter alot less then $480.00 on the interner.

I just built and installed a coil denitrater for around 60.00 with the pump its only been on line for two weeks I'll let you know how it works

Daaaaaaaaaaaa really?
The macros have taken over, there is no hair or uglies. therefore it must be the new super duper wizzz bang filter thingie. The one the requires you to put in

[hr]
of super duper bacteria from time to time.
You simply do not know if that filter is controling nitrAtes or the macros. And it is well know that macros can and will control nitrAtes. So establish them as the very first thing then do the rest. As long as they stay ahead of the uglies there is not need for these types of filters.
I know you will understand my position here. And that i feel it has to be said. To me all you had to do is add the macros to get exactly the same effect. Worse yet your existing macros may have expanded and controlled the nitrates without the filter anyway. And if you had established macros to begin with this filter would have never been necessary.

Little more information. As suspected it works on anerobic bacteria whereas the macros work with aerobic bacteria. Check out the ultralife web site.
Operating Principle:
The "Neutralizer 300" Denitrator filter is simple to use, yet is a highly efficient and effective anaerobic biological filter designed to maintain nitrate levels of the aquarium at near zero. The "Neutralizer 300" works on a cyclic flushing design principle. A "batch" of aquarium water is introduced into the "Neutralizer 300" and continuously circulated within
the filter for a period of time. During this "cycle", anaerobic bacteria is allowed to consume the nitrates from the water. When the nitrate level of this "batch" of water has
been reduced, the filter is allowed to "cycle" again. At this time the "batch" of water with reduced nitrates is reintroduced into the aquarium, and a new "batch" of aquarium water is introduced into the "Neutralizer 300" to begin the "cyclic" process again.
The design has something very similiar to bio balls which one must not clean all of at one time. So again $100s for something that could be replaced by $20.00 worth of macros. Just not necessary and one more thingie that can fail.
