nitrate out of the tap

my tap water is 10 to 20 ppm out of the faucet so that means every time i did a water change i never solved the problem of 40 ppm in the tank i would like to know would this effect my fish,anemonescrabs snailsetc.i just ordered a r.o di but was wondering if this is what killed my anemone and snails(new house never thought about checking well water)

Yes, this definitely could have killed your fish and inverts. Furthermore, your tap could have had all kinds of nasty metals like copper and lead in it.

Are you on a well or city water? Wells are worse in term of water quality..
Your best bet is to invest $100 or so in a RO/DI unit if you want to make your fish and yourself happy.

If you don't want to buy the RO unit, you can get the water from a Wallmart store for about $.30/gall, it will be cheaper in the long run to buy your own unit though.

How does one get rid of Trates? I have had mine at 40 ppm since the end of the cycle. And can't get it to lower....IT is killing me....I have done weekly water changes...normally about 15 gallons (135 gallon display), this past weekend I did a 20 gallon water change...nothing...all other parameters are doing well.

iamon well.my last house was only 1 mile away from this one and i had no problem now my well is at 20 ppm

15 gallons in a 135 will do absolutely nothing for nitrates. That size of a water change is good for replacing trace elements once a week. Do you have fish or inverts yet?

If you have nitrates in your tap then you are just making things worse if you use that water.

Yes, it is. Pease purchase an RO unit or buy RO water from a store.

Just out of curiosity, what do you keep your SG at and how do you acclimate?

I have both....
Yellow Tang, Blue Hippo, neon goby, yellowhead jawfish
Cleaner shrimp, snails, a couple of peppermint shrimp, 2 emerald crabs
Also, I do have RO/DI unit...and my SG is at 1.022...slowly trying to rais it each week during water changes, would like for it to be 1.024

test your water before you put it in the tank, i had a bad batch of water, and there were nitrates before i even put it in the tank. has anyone else ever had this problem?

yes that is what this original thread is all about i have 20 ppm right out of my tap i never checked it before,i just sold my house and moved into one a mile from the old one.my old house had no problem so i assumed(ha ha) it would be the same>ive only been here 6 months.i tested the water and thats when i saw it

i keep my sg at 1.024 same as mylfs and i usually run a small air tube with a valve on it and let it trickle into a small fish bowl were new fish and half of lfs water is.thats why i keep all my #s sameas lfs so acclimation is easier.a did by two cardinal fish from our hosts and they did great till i moved thats when all my problems started.my 100 gallon in old house was great when i moved i switched to 150g in the wall and most of my stuff died.i was told it was a 150?21 deep 22tall 72long dont no brand it was here when i moved
