I have a bad felling its going to be a build up in your plenum and for what ever reason the canister getting cleaned was a trigger or just happened at the same time. let me do some research to see if there is a way to find out if thats the problem besides tearing it up and out.

thats what I was thinking and it shouldnt have shot up that far that quickly do you have any other filtration on the tank.

can you pore some water out of the canister filter and then test it you may have a nitrate factory going in there. The give away is that you said that when you poked it brown water came out I would bet the filter is filty and it is holding nitrates and returning them in large quantities test the water and if there is a high nitrate reading shut the filter off for a day and test the tank it may be ok
but test the water in the filter I will bet you find it is much higher than your tank
Good Luck

Probably a very low bioload, not over feeding, has a deep sand bed (which help) reduce nitrates, a efficient sump with a working fuge and chaeto to catch the detritus.
What is your feeding regimen?
