Our nitrate level is between 60 and 80. Our tank is approximately 4 weeks old.....all of our other levels are great, except for the nitrate - what do we do? Do we do a water change...do we need more plants? HELP us please. Thanks

Sorry....it is a 75 gallon reef tank(with live sand). We have live sand and we have the following fish/rocks,etc in the tank:
1-cleaner shrimp; 1-coral banded shrimp; 1-coral beauty angle; 1-pink skunk clown; 1-bulb anemone; 1-emerald crab; 1-sand sifter star; 2-brittle stars; 5-damsels; 1-basslet; 2-corals; 2-featherdusters; 5-gorgonia; 1-lettuce nudibranch, and about 100 lbs of live rock. There are several species of green aquatic plants as well. Nitrates and Ammonia and pH all fine. Seems like thrid stage of cycle is the problem with Nitrates at 60-80. Will do partial water change tomorrow. Anything else? More plants. Afraid of losing coral and anemone at thes nitrate levels.

This normal for your nitrates to rise like this during a cycle...Do a 30% water change but make sure you use a siphon hose so you take the water from under the sand/gravel "this is where most Nitrifying bacteria lies"....It will definately take more then one water cahge to bring it down be patient high nitrate level wont kill anyhting instantly its over a longer time...

Thats a lot off stuff for so early in the game slow down and let the tank catch up the amemone shouldnt be in there for at least 6 months.

i agree with rickD i would get a few good books and read about the nitrogen cycle process. and then go on the internet and read some more about it. it sounds like the nitrogen cycle has not even been started. thats why u see high nitrate-and i would assume that the ammonia is high to. i would do just what rickD said leave it alone for a few weeks slow and stedie will win this race
