Are you running a skimmer? What type of substrate do you have? How many fish are in your tank and what size is it? Are you over feeding? There are a lot of factors that affect nitrate levels. Maybe if you post a little more info, someone can give you some pointers.

Considering your fish, why even worry about it? For an aggressive tank a nitrate reading of 20 is pretty darn good. Dont think you will get it any lower without some major changes such as more frequent/larger water changes, sand instead of cc, addition of macroalgae, a fuge, or large quantities of live rock. Mabe for starts a compatible cleanup crew to cleaup wastes, brittle stars, large hermits, large snails.

I find it amazing that one can make such a definitive statement based soley on what is posted in this thread.
I run a 2inch bed of CC in my 60 FOWLR and do not have any detectable nitrates, oh I have bio-balls also! I vacumm my CC bed every week and clean out my bio-ball chamber every 3-4 months.
Aspen - do you vacumm your CC when you do your water changes? If you do not then it MAY be adding to your problem. But as posted by JON321, 20 really isn't that bad in an aggresive FO tank.
Good Luck!
