nitrate

If you have any tangs or a foxface it is great to pluck this from your fuge and throw it in your display; they eat it with great zeal.

How does caulerpa reproduce sexually?

Also, I recently purchase the largest denitrator machine they have at http://aquaripure.com
I figure, I can't lose if I do both. By the way, I usually do 50 gal water changes every week and still can't get my nitrates down.

are you happy with the denitrator from aquaripure? I was thinking of buying one myself.

Separate units of caulerpa will releases a massive amount gametes into the water and they will unite in the water column to form new caulerpa plants. The water turns a pale to dark transparent yellow depending on the volume of water and amount of gametes released. I don't recall that it has any negative effect on the aquarium inhabitants, but it looks absolutely terrible from the hobbyist's perspective. Running a 24/7 refugium photo period supposedly reduces the chance of this occurring and chaetomorpha is supposedly even less likely to reproduce sexually when compared to caulerpa.
The yellow water can be cleared by running a micron filter, carbon, and protein skimming.

Peter, I get the aquaripure today which I plan to setup. I will post later on with the progress of the denitrator. My other local club recommended that I go with a deep sand bed that is about 3 feet high in the fuge, but I told them I don't have that much space. I did a 12" sand bed with two 100 gal heavy duty rubbermaid that I purchase from tractor supply co. As long as the deep sand bed don't get much oxygen, it should lower my nitrates down.
I also figure, I can't lose if I aslo setup a denitrator from aquaipure. I am tired of doing a 100 gal water change weekly.
I have over 27 fish in my tank and my father feed them 7 times a day. Here is a pic of my tangs.

5 gallon water changes arent going do anything to your nitrate. a 50% water change will bring your levels down to 20. I would do a a few big water changes spread out over a couple of weeks and defintily cut back on the feedings. I would also use poly pads as well purigen in the sump.

One thing to remember about microalgae is that it tends to thrive when the water quality is poor or when your nutrients are high then as you get them under control your microalgae will suffer. It has nothing to feed on. Just a thought FWIW

I have a 560 gal tank which house all these tang. The tang police have been after me for awhile when I had 6 tangs in an 80 gal.

Nitrate is ridiculously high for me. Going to do another water change. Just added the denitrator. I hope this work out for me.

TNN , wouldnt it also help your cause if your father didnt feed the fish 7x a day. ive never heard of someone feeding fish so much. Ive never done more than two a day. This would certainly reduce your nitrates and constant water changes.

The issued I would have will be more aggressive fish if the fish does not get feed. The tangs will beat each other to death. I have two 200 ml Red Sea Ozonizer that takes care of the ammonia. I never put any equipment for the nitrate until just this recently. Just last week, I installed a 160 gal refugium with 1 foot of sand. Yesterday, the denitrator came in which got installed as well.

my God , i would love to see a picture if this set up. you must have a lot of room. what are the measurements of the 560 DT? I would put a few large angles inthere if i had a tank that big. e.g. queen and a french angel would look awesome in there. I know you have inverts , but I'm more of a fish than a coral person.

I am more of a fish person too. Corals are just for decoration. What make the tank interesting are the fish. Here is a thread from my local club. Give the complete history of my 560 gal tank.

awesome tank . So have you considered adding other fish such as angels, triggers or wrasses as opposed to having so many tangs ?

Peter, I don't plan to add angels or triggers since there are lots of corals in the tank. I have added to fairy wrasse which are about 3" big. I am more of a tang person than an angel.
