Nitrates Out Of Control.

:help: I LOST ALL MY FISH TO ICH A MONTH AGO. I DID A 40 % WATER CHANGE AFTER THAT THEN I HAVE BEEN DOING 20 % CHANGES EVERY WEEK AND I STILL CANT GET IT UNDER CONTROL. I HAVE AN UNDERGRAVEL FILTER WITH 2 POWERHEADS AND 2 AQUACLEAR 70 GAL FILTERS. SOMEONE SAID THAT I SHOULD DITCH THE UNDERGRAVEL CUZ IT CAUSES THE HIGH NITRATE. WHAT DO I DO?

You just answered your own question, you really really need to ditch that undergravel filter, it s a nitrate, bacteria, detrius trap.. that is very old technology,, i hope it is a very old set up and nobody recently told you to start this way,, tell me a lttle more,, Live rock? live sand? what were you nitrates at? PPM? AS long as you have the undergravel filter, water changes will do nothing!

yeah it was set up that was given to me and i just set it up that way. no LR no LS just CC. my nitrites are at the max on the tester that i use by red sea. they are at 50 low and 250 high. but i had fish and they were fine for a couple of months. why now all of a sudden are they off the charts? i was hoping to upgrade soon to a fluval system, get some ls and lr and possibly a protein skimmer. what are your reccomendations?

Toss the gravel filter in the Trash. They are horrible andcause more problems then they are worth.
Also toss the CC, with the UG filter. LS is much healthier and easier to care for.

you need an AQUA C REMORA PRO SKIMMER ...should run you about 220 with the mag drive pump......thats gonna help you update your oldddddd system
