You just answered your own question, you really really need to ditch that undergravel filter, it s a nitrate, bacteria, detrius trap.. that is very old technology,, i hope it is a very old set up and nobody recently told you to start this way,, tell me a lttle more,, Live rock? live sand? what were you nitrates at? PPM? AS long as you have the undergravel filter, water changes will do nothing!
