how old is your tank, what type of filtration, what size tank, what do you have in it as far as live stock?
the tank has been running about 2 years,125 gallons, wet dry filter, protein skimmer, outside box filter. two maroon clowns two pajama cardinals ,lunare wrasse, watcman goby and two domino damsels.
Your outside of box filtration, does it have a sponge. Sometimes sponges trap nitrates in them. Do you have a cleanup crew in the tank. My last tank I used a biological filter which had no sponges or anything to trap nitrates. The only thing that trapped nitrates were the bio balls and what I did was everyonce in awhile I would do a water change and use the water I took out and rinse off about 1/2 the bio balls to try to get rid of some of the material on them. Do not rinse your bio balls (if you have them) in fresh water because you will loose some of the beneficial bacteria on them and cause your tank to possibly cycle again. If you dont have a cleanup crew its time to invest in some shrimp, crabs and snails. The scavengers will clean off any rock and substrate you have. If you have crushed coral at the bottom that sometimes will trap nitrates in it. I ran into that problem myself and adventually switched to live sand, its so much better
