i had extremely high nitrates and when i stopped feeding liquid food as much it went down, but it could be many things

It can be caused by any number of things. Overfeeding, die off in the tank, detritus buildup, poorly designed filtration, preexisting presence in source water... etc etc etc.
If you are having a problem, why not start with a list of water parameters, and some info about your tank... size, reef/FO, live rock amount, water change schedule, feeding schedule, what you feed, stock list...

I have a 30g tank with 40 lbs. of lr and 20 lbs. of ls...my trites and ammonia are 0 and my trates are about 40 but slowly falling. My tank has only been up for about a month and I am getting ready to add a clean up crew here soon when my trates drop a little more. I have no fish in the tank right now. My sg is 1.025 and my temp is 80. I do a weekly water change of about 8 gallons with RO water, but my trates have been this high for about 2 weeks now. They started at about 50 and now they are only down to 40...any ideas?

Your tank is young, and will not have 0 nitrates for a few months. The more established your tank becomes the easier it is to keeping nitrates in check (assuming you aren't over feeding, fish dying, etc). 40 isn't too bad for a month old tank - you probably just finished the cycle a week ago. Just do weekly water changes(10%) and in about a month or two you'll see your NA down in the teens.

I have never had below 10ppm for nitrates, and I have a 29 gal cube with a refugeum, 35 lbs of LR about 20lbs of LS. At my lowest reading was when my tank was fishless for 8 weeks, between 10 and 15 ppm. All I did was ghost feed once a week. I have no idea why I couldnt get my trates to 0. I tried just about every thing i could.

I didn't have 0 nitrates until I had to top off water every day b/c of my MH
