I did a 20 gallon water change in my DT using reef crystals salt that was mixed for 2 days at 5am-6am...I just ran a check of all my parameters and they were all excellent except for Nitrite oddly was 0.1 and it was 0 before the water change I tested b4 as I usually test b4 and after...is this level toxic and why would it be 0.1 when ammonia was 0 and nitrate was 2.5 ? ph is 8.2 and salinity 1.025 temp 80F..bad batch of salt ? phosphates were 0.5 i need some algae and I have phosban and a reactor i will install in 26 days calcium was 400 and magnesium was 1300 alk is 10 dkh.

Just to be safe, test your source water. If that reads zero then you are fine. The nitrite should be zero, so keep an eye on it. Did the tank just cycle? Do you have fish in there?

no just corals the fish are in hypo in the 55 the 120 is full of coral and inverts and I will do another test I did a few more small ater changes last night so i think it will be back to 0...the tank was from the 55 that is now a qt and was upgraded 2 weeks ago to a 120 all the fish/corals/invers from 55 to 120 then ick was there had to remove the fish and do hypo thats going great
basically i was just worried if a nitrite level of 0.1 was toxic for inverts/corals...like i said i did some small changes so when i test soon im hopefully expecting a 0 reading. thanks.

Nitrite is not as toxic as ammonia, but it isn't good either. I am very glad to hear that your hypo is going well!!

it was a pain in the rear end something ai will never do again. I'm sure when I put in the fish back they will get ick again it;s inevitable so I dont care anymore. I spent 5 days day and night on this...this hobby isn't fun anymore.

when you do a water change try not to stir the tank up too much ,this can cause a mini cycle in your tank.

It's a lot of work some time, but anything you enjoy is something you'll still have to put time and energy into. Don't get too discouraged, in time you'll have all this experience and knowledge and it will help you make decisions to reduce the future work you have to put into it.

I understand how things get frustrating at times. This too shall pass.
This is part of the schooling. I got a big head cause all my stuff was thriving and doing so good I got a little lazy and had a major tank crash.
I'm just now getting the tank half way back to where I had it, but I did learn a lot and am taking a lot better care. It is starting to be fun again and I am taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. Just remember when things get hard you are learning something important.

I retested again today and my nitrites were 0.1 the ammonia was at 0 and the nitrates were 5 the test kit is ok and accurate I don't understand if the ammonia is 0 then the nitrites went from being stable at 0 to 0.1 and the nitrates went from 0 to 5ppm so what did i do wrong and will another water change fix the nitrites or am i just overworrying and a level 0.1 for more than afew days will not be toxic to the fish or inverts or corals..so far everything is alive and well.

Did the nitrite ever spike before? That is how the cycle goes. The ammonia spikes then comes down, then you will see the nitrite rise. It can take awhile, especially in larger tank.

For 6 months levels were at 0.
So I dont know this just happened a week ago. ammonia at 0 nitrate at 5 so hopefully with time it just levels out. will doing a 10 percent water change hurt ?

Did it ever spike before though? When you cycled your tank how high did the ammonia go and how high did the nitrite go? Is this the first that you have had nitrate as well?

this tank originally cycled like 3 years ago..don't remember but they all spiked..usually at the end of each month the ammonia goes to .10 and the nitrite goes to 0.1 then nitrate goes to 2.5 thats how it has been for the past 6 months then after the water change the levels always go down to 0...now the ammonia reads 0 nitrite 0.1 and nitrate 5 but i have been feeding more. to try and help the ill fish with the immune system and give them proper nutrients.
