If it is on top of the sand...sort of slimmy scummy looking it may be cyano...I had some on the surface of my sand bed a long time ago. I used a vac to gently remove it while I was doing a water change...actually had to suck the stuff off twice...never has returned since. Also as mentioned if it is below the top of the sand along the glass that is sort of normal....from time to time I will slide my algae scrapper between the glass and sand to remove it if it builds up too much. The article refered above is a good one...check it out and don't panic...*_^
Its probably not toxic...just unsightly!!!

I had a similar eyesore, a black/brown patch right below my sandbed on the front glass, it enevtually turned a beautiful red color and is now all along the front glass, about a half inch from the top layer of sand!

I'm new to the world of dsb's and can't really help ya here. The only dark spots I've had were do to algae growing in the sand, against the glass. I'm still getting bubbles in the top inch of my sand and it's been 3 months since I built my sand bed from 2" to 4". Read all of the info provided by people on this board and do some of your own research on the net. Take all the info, shake it up and form a plan of your own, something that sounds right to you.
