ok so i started my 10g and 20g nanos today and i bought all my LR and LS today from my LFS first time buying from them. looked a few times but never anybody there who could totally answer my questions.
so talking to the owner(only guy working today) he was saying that because i am buying live rock and live sand in my tank i will not cycle. i guess alot of ppl buy it this way so they can have fish in there the next day.
is this true?
will my tanks cycle?
thank you

Switch stores.....I started my tank with live rock, and live sand, and you still go through some type of cycle...I am no expert, but I think the live rock helps speed up the process, it does not eliminate it...take your time and wait a little bit, then just add a few small things to start with.

unless you use live rock that is completely cycled from an established tank and transport it to your tank fully submerged, you are going to have some sort of cycle.

everything was fully cured. the rock they sell is fully cured and it never left the water maybe for like 5 seconds from the bucket to the tank.

then i believe all you will see is the diatom bloms and such. you might not get an ammonia spike. i'd still watch it via water tests for a couple weeks just to be on the safe side.

+1
My nano didn't have a cycle but got diatoms less than week from start. My rock was under water with exception of a few seconds when being moved into the tank. Our large tank on the other hand ended up having a cycle 3 weeks after setup and in that case too the LR was fully cured and under water.

ok thanks i will wait a while before i do anything.
thanks again
thats the right answer! patience is the biggest key in this hobby. i would give it a good 2 weeks testing often, after that buy something inexpensive and wait again...

i know all about the waiting game. i had a 55g with no fish in it for alsomt 2 months. i had one snail for a months cuz i just couldnt get everything just right. so i know its a long wait before it pays of.

I can believe it, I went through pretty much the exact situation you did. It's been almost 2 weeks and no ammonia spike at all. I'm on my 2nd raw shrimp just to be sure though.
