No fish tank

Does anyone here or has anyone kept a coral only tank with no fish? I was thinking about using a 5 gallon tank I have with a dsb a piece of LR a powerhead and an MH light with some coral frags and maybe a clam. I know people recomend against, small saltwater tanks because of instability, but if there were no fish, the waste levels would be minimal??? Any way just a thought, not a for sure thing. Any comments.

I was going to do the same thing...when i get the money. It would be a great idea. but i think you should get a bit bigger tank w/ the clam and all the corals and lr. its possible. at my lfs they have a huge 300 gal with just coral and lr and some inverts.

I was planning to start a 2.5 gallon tank. Very tiny.. but you could house some cool critters in there. No fish, ofcourse, because that would be considered cruel. I would only put a few inverts and some coral in there.

I know the challange of nano tanks is very intriguing, and I played around with a 10 gallon for a few months as well. But if I was leaning towards MH lighting set up jedimaster, I would go with a larger tank too.
Nothing wrong with tiny tanks - but you're talking about one of the most expensive equipment for small tank - the lighting - and you could easily go with say a 15 high or 20 at least ( or larger ).
A totally coral reef tank and clean up crew would be awesome - and if you ever wanted to add a fish - you would still have that option.
Plus it would certainly be much easier to maintain good water quality without fish waste to contend with.
I'm sure I could keep a tiny coral frag alive in a shot glass if I did everything right and had the time to babysit the little thing - but really - what's the use - unless we just like to say "we did it"
And if that's the case - more power to ya !

It's not *that* complicated. I wouldn't put any hard to keep corals in a nano.. I would just like a smaller tank that's portable and smaller. I think Nano's are pretty cool. If someone wants to take the time to make sure everything will be ok and they have the right equipment, I don't think theres a problem with that.
"What's the use?" All in all.. fish tanks are pretty useless but I think the smaller tanks are just as appealing and interesting as larger tanks. What's the use of keeping saltwater fish at all? If a person does it correctly, and dosn't try to stick a fish in a betta bowl, I don't see what's wrong with nanos. They're just as good as larger tanks. Not trying to start an argument here.. just thought I would throw in my opinion too.

You are so right galina !
My choice of words was not the best there was it.
The use is that nano's are fun and cool for sure - and anything fun has a wonderful use ;)
I suppose I should have said "go at it and have a ball - and that I found the small tank to be tricky - seeing that I had 3 other tanks going at the same time"
That's what I mean for me - that I thought to myself
"what's the use in me fighting with this little tank, while my larger one's were doing so well, but getting somewhat neglected"
Too many test needed done, and I was getting overwhelmed - ya know.
I'm glad you threw your opinion in :)
I gotta watch it sometimes when I voice my opinion - no ill intentions really !!!
See ya - thank you too !!
