I live in Hawaii and the state has made it illegal to aquire any live rock or live coral. I cant even order it from the internet. I do have access to some dead rock and am planning on adding some in a few weeks. I was wondering if it would be possible to "seed" the dead rock so that the critters will grow? Any suggestions?

OK b ball 12 or what ever it is , if its so easy why didnt you tell him??????? I thought you needed live rock to seed dead rock......FIXIT

Ok, No problem. If you have LS then it will seed the base rock, you just won't have as much of a variety of living things present. Even CC has things living in it. My explaination seem good enough for ya???

You can but whats called a detrivore kit, it has smoe of the stuff you need. You can also buy bio-active sand that has your denitrifying bacteria. BUT, your best bet might be to get a ziplock baggie full of sand from a buddy with an established tank.

I have whent through three resources and they all have said you need at least a small piece of live rock to seed base rock!!! Also the live sand will not seed BASErock,[ Sprung and Delbeek artical 1990],,FIXIT

if you cant buy or get LR from the ocean, then its probably illegal to even own it. if you made base rock into LR wouldnt you then be breaking the law anyways? just seems illegal to me, dont know how it works though.

considering it is illegal to import, take or apparently own but you want to seed your rock anyway, heres what I would do in your situation. Take a couple of pounds of baserock, go for a swim and plant your rock. Return about a month or so later and haul it in. Your not piliging (spelling) the ocean because it's rock you planted , so no reason to feel bad there and if someone were to complain throw it at them and run away, lol, just yankin your dorsel fin. Is there a way to apply somewhere to be able to plant your own rock for removal later? Say if the rock is tagged before you put it into the ocean that way you can show the tag when it's removed so the authorities would know if it's rock you put there or not? Seem to me that if one can obtain licensing to catch fish, take corals, etc. that one should be able to plant and remove their own rock, especially since it wouldnt be there until you placed it.

Good Idea Saltwater; I will call the waikiki aquarium when I get back to see if they will let me plant some. I didnt even think about that. The way I see it is it's illegal for me to take it and buy it but if I grow it there is no way they can find out unless they come into my house and I figure if they are in my house I will probably be in worse trouble than "stealing some coral".
Thanks again

why would it be ileagel to own or seed your own live rock!?!?!?! the only reason that in hawaii you cant buy it is so that they protect the reefs b/c when people sell lr its from coral reefs and the people in hawaii dont want the reefs o be depleted so i really doubt it would be illeagel to own as long as you didnt like get it from the coral reefs is should be perfectly leagel!!!

I pulled this info from the Hawaii coral reef network webring, current laws pertaining to both corals and liverock. The last one is what will interest you. I also posted a question to the board of Marine Biologists there and I am waiting on a reply.
Taking or damaging coral, live rocks and coral rubble
State law prohibits the intentional taking of, breaking or damaging, with crowbar, chisel or any other implement, any live stony coral from the waters of Hawaii, including any live reef or mushroom coral. HRS § 188-68
It is unlawful to intentionally take, break or damage, with crowbar , chisel or any other implement, any rock or coral to which marine life of any type is visibly attached or affixed. HRS § 188-68
null
The taking of sand, coral rubble or other marine deposits is permitted in certain circumstances. The material may not exceed one gallon per person per day, and may be taken only for personal, noncommercial purposes. HRS § 171-58.5, § 205A-44

Lol, you hold a grudge don't you? It was an easy suggestion. I still feel you don't need LR to have baserock grow bacteria, get critters, grow algea, and overall become LR. The first ever LR had to start somehow.

No I dont hold a grudge, but you were a little sarcastic and, you gave info that ment nothing, you have givin good advise in the past but, to someone that just started this board you should check resources or dont give advice at all. I know your young and alot of things you need to learn, but I also want to learn new things also, so lets take all opinions as a could be and not as always a fact , lets have fun and enjoy this hobby because you never know if tommorrow will ever come....fixit :) :) :) :)

The New Guy,
Howzit?, So im thinking................
If it is illegal to harvest live rock and corals in hawaii by chipping it off or using other forms of reef destructive methods, which it is, you should contact the hawaii reef network biologists and get some info. As I see it, if worst comes to worst, you can swim out and dump your rock and go back and pull it in a month or so down the road, and like you say, unless your house gets raided who will know, and from a conservationist standpoint, you are doing nothing wrong as you will only be removing rock that you planted, is not connected to the reef, and will not have to be chipped off to harvest and will not disturb natural habitat. I would contact the marine biology training facilities on the big island and oahu and I am sure they will be able to give you some info, who knows, maybe they will drop some of your rock into their tanks, wouldnt hurt to ask. Aloha.
