No live rock

If acquiring live rocks is really difficult there in Hawaii, can you obtain reef water from the sea where there are coralline growth (because coralline algae and other good stuff must be present in the surrounding water)? If so, you can experiment with that, use a VHO, actinic bulbs. The idea is that of mold, they are present in the air and with the right conditions they will germinate. I think that will work but it takes time. And if it does you will be a pioneer! ;)

It might be true that you can not have live rock, but isn't true that you can caught your own fish!!!! If so what a savings.

For those who replied and are interested: I went and got some base rock the other day and put it in my tank. The rock is from a beach that is near an industrial area. I soaked the rock in bleach water before putting it in the tank and when I was finished I saw a crab skeleton and what looked to me like a small piece of coral. I was advised to soak it due to the possibility of contaminants. A few hours after placing the rock into the tank I noticed 2 snails crawling around. I have to go and get some more tomorrow.
Next week I am planning on going snorkeling and I will grab a couple of small pieces of live rock to see if I can seed the stuff I got now.
I also got some good news; I can go to the beach and take some sand so I am going to do that too ;)
