no sand fuge?

could i get away with running a fuge without sand? I was thinking just a bunch of live rubble rock and some macro algae. anyone see any problems with this? Thanks.

IMO it would depend on if you also have a sump or not. If you dont have a sump and only having the fuge then it will collect a bunch of the detritus and stuff that ends up going through the overflow. If you also have a sump then these particles will stay there. At least that is what happened to me when I tried just having a fuge without any LS.
