No water changes?

There has been alot of threads on water changes lately. I was wondering, assuming a tank that is well established with a refugium, DSB and LR. If the nitrates were under control (at zero), the pH was stable and so on, would a water change be nessisary? Is there a reason to do water changes other than to regulate pH and nitrates?
I am new to this hobby, is a stable tank that does not need water changes an unrealistic goal?

Read my message/topic from yesterday with the title FISH KILL.
I am starting to believe that I would have been better off not doing a water change...my chemistry was perfect before the change.
Tell me what you think!
