America's Ever-Growing Portion Sizes

August 31, 2011 at 7:13AM by Katie Robbins | 14 Comment
With bucket-sized soft drinks, bagels the size of baseballs, and burgers that you can barely get your mouth around, it's no wonder that, according to the CDC, one-third of adult Americans are currently obese. In the last 20 years portions have been ballooning — and we've been getting bigger right along with them. From 1980 to 2008, obesity rates doubled for adults and tripled for children.
Thanks to the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute (part of the National Institutes of Health), we can take a peek back at what portions looked like 20 years ago and compare that to what they look like now. Hint? They've gotten a lot, lot bigger. (via DivineCaroline.com)

Dear Lord!
Yeah, I knew our portion sizes are all out of whack, but I didn't know it was that bad. Seems like the average person could loose a lot of weight just by cutting modern portion sizes in half. Staying away from soda is also a big one. I know I have lost 62 pounds by exercising a bit and drinking water.
I remember awhile ago where I saw a picture of a bag of popcorn with butter and a large fountain drink was the same as eating two large double cheeseburgers and 16 pats of butter. It's unreal! I dropped another 5 pounds not long ago because I stopped getting sweets and popcorn at the theater. Every little bit helps!

Funny, I gain and lose weight at will. I am currently at 220 and had bottomed out in 2009 at 187. I am 6'5" and can cut out all sugar/starch based foods and drop 30 lbs in a month. Some might call it yo-yoing, I call it effective weight management. If I notice I've gained weight, I cut out what I know causes it and drop down where I feel comfortable. I eat just as much when I'm losing weight as I do when I gain it. So portion control is not the problem, it's what you eat not how much.

Not to say their isn't an issue with portion size but that chart is full of it. When I was a kid you got soda in a 16 oz bottle or 12 oz if you used a vending machine. First bagel I ever saw was in high school and they were the same size they are now. Burgers and fries have gotten bigger but I remember as a kid if we went to MacDonalds the adults usually got 2 burgers, those things were tiny.

I would agree with reef... NY is the bagel capital of the world and I have NEVER seen a bagel as small as what is shown on that chart. Same goes for soda. Who here has seen a 6.5 ounce bottle of soda in the last 30 years that wasnt some promotional gimmick. Cans have always been 12 ounces and bottles either 16 or 20 ounces, at least in the last 30 years. Muffin and Pasta serving sizes are out of whack too since they are subject to whoever is making them.

the burger on the left looks more like what someone would get from mcdonalds today then the one on the right but i guess that not the case for alot of other restaraunts. Im too young to know what food looked like 20 years ago though

people are getting fatter because of that (bigger portion sizes) and also with all the artificial/man-made ingredients being used in our food today... preservatives, flavors (natural and artificial- both awfully bad for you), colors used in food, artificial sweeteners (splenda, others), the list goes on and on.
