NOISY Overflow

Hi.
I just finished setting up the 240. I am new to larger tanks and overflows. when I first set it up, it was VERY loud. So I set up a regular standpipe, i.e., just a length of PVC to raise the water level up closer to the tank inflow level.
That reduced the noise by a lot, but it is still pretty loud. Especially considering that it is right outside our bedroom door.
I looked at the Durso standpipe, but my overflow measures only 5" wide by 4.5" front to back.
Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get this thing to be quieter? I think I may have to shut it off for tonight.

I'm guessing here that you are talking about the overflow box?
It could be a couple things
1) you could just not be use to the noise, I slept in the spare bedroom the first night because it was so loud.
2) I don't know why but mine seemed to quiet down with age
3) maybe your intake pipe (the tube/pipe leading down to your sump/refuge) needs adjusting. Mine quieted down alot when i adjusted it.

Can you post a pic of how your overflow is setup? I may be able to help.. turning it off at night would be a bad idea, but the noise is definitely curable. You'll definitely need a properly setup durso, but turning it diagonally may help with fitment.

I just installed a 1/4'' airline tube in the drain pipe. It takes some patience to adjust it right but it works. Basically you only need the airline tube to be a 1/4 inch inside the drain pipe. Once you no longer see the little tornados that form over the drain pipe You are getting close. Good luck

I did the old - dish towel on the top of the overflow trick - and it worked for me. Fold it up and put it on the box outside the tank, work pretty well. I also did the PVC pipe in the overflow to raise the level in the box and that cut down on the noise also.

Does your overflow pipe have a siphon stop hole drilled in it? If it does and has salt accumulated in it, clean it up. Also you may want to drill the whole larger. That will take care of the sound as the water level in your overflow will get closer to the level of the water in the DT side of the tank.
Our 150 gets loud every few days and I need to clean up the salt creep from the whole.

Hey thanks to all who replied

Here's how I solved it, hope this helps someone:
After my initial post, I went back to the tank to see if I could quiet it down myself. I wanted to see if interrupting the water flow pattern would effect the gurgling sound, so I just used my fingers to disturb the flow. Doing this I noticed an immediate end to ALL the noise by just disturbing the water flow at the intake.
SOOO, I went to my pile of spare PVC (accumulated during the set-up of the tank, I guess everyone has a pile of this stuff
) I didn't find what I thought would work, but decided to try some 1" 90 degree elbows. I slipped on into the top of my 1 1/4 standpipe, and BOOM!! Total silence.
If anyone wants to try this mod, it's just a standard 1 1/4" standpipe with a 1" 90 degree elbow slipped on the top. It sits basically right at the tank water level, or maybe 3/4" below, and the water just flows down to the sump in total silence.
IDK if this is something already being done, but it worked really well for me.
