Hello all. Thought I would introduce myself as I begin my SW experience. My last name is Sweat and Im a car guy. I had absolutely no knowledge of how a SW setup works before last week and finding this forum. I bought a 55 gallon tank used and havent received everything that came with the deal yet.
My car is almost done with this round of modifications, so I need a new project. The car will never be completely finished either.
I plan on doing a reef tank and taking things very slow. Thinking about doing barebottom but not sure that is a good choice for me. I live in a very old house and very close to railroad tracks.
here is where my tank will be. It was last used as freshwater and those stinking rocks are gone. Still have to get it level and clean everything when I get the rest and decide what I can use.

and under the hood of my money pit. I have to crank it, check for leaks, and get it to the tuner and it is done for now

What kind of reef? Mixed, LPS, SPS, Softies, Mushrooms? What? What fish do you plan on? What filtration system? What kind of lighting do you have? Corals require high intensity light and good water flow- besides the great parameters. Fill me in on the tank specs. The most important is PATIENCE!

Hi and welcome to the site!
Make sure your old floors are strong enough for a SW tank, with all the rock, sand and equipment a SW tank weighs much more than a FW tank. Also make sure the electric can handle it. GFCI outlets are a very good idea for safety .

Thanks spanko!
rickross those rocks were in it when I got the tank, they are gone now but I still havent gave the tank a proper cleaning yet.
Im not sure on what reef or fish yet. I still have alot to learn, my wife asked if Im writing a book when she seen my research notepad. lol
the old floors should be fine and I had the house rewired when I moved in
lighting is still undecided also. a T5 setup will be cheaper but I know I will want MHs.
I am very patient and do tons of research before spending any money. This is a project that will take a long time.

Thanks. single MP T70/ .68AR turbo getting tuned tomorrow, so no HP number yet. I spend many hours on the DSM forums researching holset turbos before I found a deal on the MP.
wife says I cant spend any money on tank until car is done. LOL. I took the family to Cumberland Island today for a beach trip. That got her interested in starting the project!
SnakeBlitz33 thanks for the info you post. Ive searched alot on here already and found alot of detailed info from you and a few others. Gemmy's seahorse tank is something I definitely want to do, but that will be after much more learning and experience.
