Was setting up the tank last week and thought I was putting water conditioner in the water and instead it was gun oil!!!!! Bottles are the same size & color & somehow it got in my box of supplies. I should have noticed but I was in a hurry. Now what do I do???? Water has been in there for 6 days but I just now realized it was gun oil while mixing more salt water cause the salinity was low. Do I need to start completely over? There is nothing in the tank but water & live sand (probably not live anymore!). Any help greatly appreciated for the dumbest mistake yet found on this website!
:help:

Can we all bow our heads in a moment of silence for Michelle! I would start total over and rinse out everything a bizzilion times with the hottest water I could find. Substrate is toast.
So Sorry!

Washing in clorox would be good a few times then I would let it soak in a strong mix of vinegar and RO water. If you want to make sure then do the silicone thing but you may not have to. The oil should not penetrate the silicone itself but might get under it so replacing the seal would be good also. Lots of luck to ya..

Okay, I am relatively new at saltwater so this advice may be all wet, (please pardon pun) but I know that bleach will not remove oil. Amonia will. I know amonia is deadly to everything saltwater but amonia can be rinsed off things and will evaporate. I would clean everything off with amonia/fresh water including running it through the pump and other mechanics. Then I would run fresh water through the same stuff. Then RO water. Then let everything dry out for a few days or a week. If you want to clean it with bleach water you could but let it dry out again. Then try the bristle worm test. DO NOT MIX AMONIA AND BLEACH!!!! IT CAN DO HARM TO YOU!!! It releases clorine gas from the bleach. Good luck.

Thanks for everyone's input, guess I will get started on it today. Would it be ok to use snails for the test? I have over 100 of them. Or can they survive almost anything? Again thanks everyone, even for the jokes!

It makes a crude form of Mustard gas. But I do like the idea on the snails. Because they would be all over the tank and find a spot you might have missed. And as I sit here I just remembered. Forget the bleach and use Dawn dish soap. It really takes out the grease out of my hands after working on the car. And washes out. But I'd still do a vinager wash afterward.

I would not use soap in an aquarium, you are messing with fire!!!!!!!!
my brother did that on his 55 gallon and whatever he tried after that the fish would die, the soap would not come out! he used dish soap!
I would not try that!!!
When using a bleach mix you should always take everything out and completely drain tank.
So you would be cleaning a bare tank.
When doing it this way you wont have to worry about gas discharge, especially if your doing it outside.

I agree 100%. If it worries you that much, don't use it OR, cut the sylicone out from the inside. leave the joints alone and run a fresh bead of sylicone, and be done!

Just so you know you are not the only one to mistake one bottle for another, a friend of mine spent the night in the hospital because bottles of nail glue are the same shape and size of the re-wetting solution for contacts! It wasnt pretty!
