but the tank that I am getting is not drilled=no overflow. Is there a way to dplicate the effects of the overflow in my tank without the actul box and drill holes?

i had the same problem with my 55 i found a big piece of pvc pipe and cut it on half and with a jigksaw i made the teeth for the overflow to drill the tank i bought a saw on ---- for like 10 bucks and the tank is reef ready now
i dont like the idea of a extra pump either but in this case i think the aqua lifter could save a big head ache and time if you lost suction... just wondering if anyone has and exsperience with these pumps?
You can still lose suction if micro bubbles start to build up. You have to tap the u tube once in a while to ensure the bubbles don't build up.
Probably a velocity problem or something.
i use a HOB overflow box with the u-tube syphon..never lost the syphon..never had problems with bubbles building up...very easy to stop and restart..just lift up the entire box so water isn't entering the skim box anymore and just drop it back into the water to restart...the hard part is starting the syphon for the first time....
so umm, what happens when you lose power (obviously while your not home) and the u-tube siphons until it sucks air and loses siphon... then the power comes back on. wouldn't your pump come back on and empty your sump into the display until it overflows?
drilling a tank is so easy its worth it if anything just for the piece of mind.
it will suck out water untill ur DT water level goes below the skimming part of the box and it stop and to restart the syphon again, simply turn ur pump back on and it will restart the syphon when the water level pasts the skimming part of the box...
