Yea it pumps about 350 an hour then I have a Nano skimmer which doubles as a pump and filter(I know it prolly doesnt do much though)
I was planning on getting a powerhead this weekend. I just ordered an RO/DI unit so I will start using that once it shows up. I just changed water yesterday though so it should be here right around the same time that I need to change water again.
The filter has the carbon cartridges in it. I am planning on upgrading to like a Fluval 405 Canister but I have to see what I have for money right now (im in college). I have a 36" florescent 3 light strip with 2 10,000k's and 1 Blue Actinic lights. It's not a PC or MH setup.
Thanks alot for all the help, I am new to Marine so anything I can learn will be helpful.
Hydrometers are also not always accurate. A refractometer is dead on. They are NICE. Yes, the liquid test kits, salifert or red sea, are most accurate.
I see alot of people with the same filter as yours so I think it is sufficient, I'm not sure. I am using the Fluval 205 which is rated for up to a 40 gallon tank.
Get some powerheads for the bottom of your tank so the water circulates everywhere. I assume that since you don't have your ro unit yet your using tap water? BAD BAD BAD boy
! I have a four 5 gallon jugs and I go to walmart and fill them up out of the collegan (sp?) thing -- $1.66 each
Its ro water so I don't have to worry about getting an ro unit. You might want to think about that instead of running an ro unit for that small of a tank. Its much easier. I do a 5 gallon water change weekly and don't use a protein skimmer b/c of the size of tank and the amount of water change I was told I don't have to have a skimmer. I use the other containers for top off water.
Smaller tanks are much more difficult to take care of and can get out of wack MUCH easier than a large tank. Remember to only add one fish at a time and wait about 3 weeks before adding another and don't add too many fish! I think the rule of thumb is 2 inches of fish per 5 gallons water...I would say you could keep at max 5 small fish in that tank. I have 3 only.
As for your lights, depending on your type of coral they might not be enough and that might be the problem with your coral. Try to find out what type of coral it is by doing some research on corals and then check to see what its needs are. They have an extensive list of corals they sell on this site with a description of their needs, maybe you can find what you have in there.
Last, I would seriously consider trading the cc for live sand. cc traps nitrates and when you vaccum the cc if you mix it up too much it will make your nitrates go up. If you have live sand you don't have to vaccum because the critters keep it clean.
Well that is all I can think of for now...if I think of something else I will let you know.
Anyone feel free to correct me if you feel I have given wrong information. :)

I looked at refractometers after I read your last post and they were like $150+. I definitely can't buy one of those anytime soon.
I just ordered an RO unit so I am kinda stuck with it now anyways but in the long run it will pay for itself. Yea for the time being I just have tap water. I never even knew about RO until about a week ago.
Right now all I have in my tank is a yellowtail blue damsel, some black and yellow damsel that nobody seems to know what exactly it is, a red striped goby, a Sally Lightfoot crab and about a dozen hermits. The only other fish I know of right now that I want is a Maroon and gold clown.
I know from talking to the LFS guy that my coral is a mushroom coral but I don't know the exact species. It is back to normal now since I changed the water and vacuumed the cc.
I am planning next summer to hopefully upgrade to a 75 gallon so I will be getting a can filter anyways. I wish I would have taken the one my dad offered to me but its too late now.

Nah, my refractometer cost $34 and its pretty nice. I got it from the two doctors site (we are not allowed to post competitive sites)...I have a 125 complete setup you can up grade to LOL

I wish I could do a 125 but I can't afford it and this little apartment has no room for it. Unless......I get rid of my bed and sleep on the floor....lol yea right
I have no clue what two doctors is but that whole deal is dumb because I dont think they even sell refractometers on this site.

So I think I figured out what the problem is I threw my hydrometer in there just now and it read about 1.023 and it said the temp was about 62F which could be why everything is so inactive, because they are cold and trying to conserve energy. So tomorrow when I head to the store I guess I know what I am buying...a heater

Yeah, 62F is definitely a problem. I'm surprised everything is still alive. Also, is your hydrometer a glass lab style or a plastic swing arm?

yea I know....I guess I am lucky, I never even thought to check the temp until I touched the glass and it was freezing cold. I guess thats prolly why some days they seem fine and some they don't.

So I picked up a heater today the guy at the LFS told me to set it to like 70 tonight and then move up in a day or 2 the question I have is what temp should I set it to?

So I put the heater in and the water was already @ 70F so I set it to 76F. I have never seen my fish so active as this. Only one problem now. My black damsel has become a huge bully attacking my yellowtail, and sally lightfoot. I am not sure what I should do to get him to stop. I really like is color pattern. Hes prolly my favorite in the tank so far and I was thinkin about pickin up the other one that looks just like him at the shop. But I dont want to have anybody bullying on anybody. Should I just get rid of him?

Damsels are nasty fish. If you don't get rid of them now, you won't be able to keep anything else that's not a toughguy fish. And take it from me, they are a bitch to catch when the tank is loaded up with corals and rock. I still haven't gotten them all out.

My blue yellowtail is very chill all he does is swim slowly, run away from the black damsel, and suck algae off the back glass and rocks. The black one is the problem. I am headed to the LFS on Friday and I am gonna see if they can take him back or not. They should the guy is really nice and has gave me free stuff a couple times (today I got a few free zooanthids with a mushroom I bought and they weren't even on the same rock or anything) My next plan for fish is to hopefully find a mated pair of percs. Right now I just have some zooanthids, a mushroom, and long tentacle anemone and I don't have my rockwork they way I want it anyways so I am not afraid of moving it out to catch him. I need to figure out how I want to put the rocks so I can easily add in some corals without rearranging everytime I want to add one.
