IMO you dont need ro water if you are doing FO. and if you use ro water you may see a 15 to 18% difference in algea. simple ,cheaper, solution... beef up your cuc. but the lack of algea in our home aquariums is unnatural. if you have been on a reef you will know what i am talking about lol. ro water is only needed if you are going reef IMO. tap water doesnt afect you pets. i have a coloney of feather dusters coming up in my tank and i use tap. they all seem fine. just do reasech on your areas tap and see whats in it. most people on this forum would shoot me for saying this but its my honest opinion.

I'm on a well, so it's not even city water, our water is hard (which is better than soft right? Soft is acidic hard is alkalai? Been awhile since general chemistry in college) it's got iron calcium and manganese in it. And yeah I'm fish only, well I have crustaceans as well but that's it, no corals or anemones or anything

i think you will be alright as long as you just do inverts and fish. water hardness is irelivent to salt water. once you put every thing together the tank will come to a steady ph wich should be around 8.0-8.4.

Another problem I see is if you just take the UGF offline, You'll have trapped water underneath that wont be circulating and will become a major dead spot creating toxins. And with the gravel (which needs to be sand, not gravel or crushed coral) those toxins are going to leach into the water column giving you a much bigger problem. Don't just take it offline. Take it out and start over with sand and live rock and cycle the tank again.
Give the fish a new home till then.

There is a great thread in the "New hobbyists" section written by SnakeBlitz that has all the info your looking for. I bumped it to the top to make it easy to find. I really think you should read it.
