NOT TRIGGER HAPPY today

New arrival has ick
The Fed Ex guy handed me the box, and one of two triggers is LOADED, and I mean LOADED with ick. So, after 1 hour acclimation to 1.023 salinity, I dropped tha salinity in the hospital to 1.020, and re acclimated him/her. Heater set to 82F, and ran to the store to get Cupramine. The thing is, the poor fish is petrified, and surely stressed out to the tenth power. After playing dead for an hour, and becoming pale and splotchty, ( all normal for queen triggers when scared ) the fish is finally upright, but frozen in fear, and going back and forth from splotchy to normal. It's sad, yet comical that the fish has been in this same position for 2 hours now, yet fins, eyes, and gills moving. Like a statue of a fish. With so much ick causing stress, the thing to do you'd think would be get the ick off fast with low salinity, or copper, but I don't want to kill the fish in the process. Any ideas out there? The fish is about 3 inches.....

If the guy is that bad off I would do a freshwater dip and then into the copper qt tank. you will need a water ph buffer and get the water the same temp(ro water unsalted) and put him there for upto five min. usually its 2-3 untill he is having a hard time breathing. this process explodes the ich parasites then add him into the copper treated tank for 14 to 21 days that should get him back on track

Agreed.. If the fish is in that bad of shape you need to dip him before the ick kills him... I had to do that with a coral beauty about a year ago. Just broke out really bad almost died, but after doing exactly what Greg just described. Dipping the fish in fresh water for about 5 minutes then putting it in the hospital tank I was able to save the fish... Good luck to you..

I did this and he went wild after 40 seconds, so I let him stay in for 1 full minute, then returned him to the hospital, lowered salinity to 1.018 and added copper. Thanks guys, I've been on the other post with Beth ( same post on disease forum ) I should probably dip him again, ya think?

I've had my own battles with ick and I don't think dipping him in fresh water is a good thing to do as ick is usually started from stress and I've got to think doing the dip is as stressful as you can get. I think you where on the right track with lowering the salinity. What worked for me with my hippo tang is I soaked the food in Selcon to give needed vitamins to help keep his strength
then I tried to keep him as stress free as possible with lots of hiding places and a shorter lighting period. And I made sure he got the food. He is now totally ick free and happy.
I not saying to do this but its just another way for you to consider as the fresh water dip sounds harmful to me considering how terrified he is already.

he's very sparky now, and the salinity is going lower, by tomorrow it will bottom out, plus the copper... and we'll all see what happens. Thanks all...

a large, well known, California based, on line supplier. Not supposed to mention competitors, they've been cool about it, e mailing etc. They apologized and said the fish came from Brazil, they're looking for another for me. The fish is doing well though, despite the affliction. Sadly he will have to be kept alone ( now I have to get another big tank system ) or he'll infect other fish until we can figure out a cure for WHATEVER THIS IS..
