nova extreme

Was wondering what people thought of this fixture? 4X54W with moonlights. Im gonna have a 55 gallon tank with softies and a few lps, will this light cut it? Heard a retrofit 2bulb tek fixture will beat the 4 bulb novas?

I almost went with that on my 55g tank but decided since it didn't have individual reflectors to go with PC lighting (not that this fixture wouldn't have still matched or beat the PCs, just went PC for the cheap factor, plus it gives me a good reason to upgrade properly someday). I keep 2 different types of candy canes, frogspawn, mushrooms, zoas, and 3 types of monti SPS coral in my tank with the PCs and everything thrives. Of course, my next tank will definitely have MH lighting.

So i imagine it wont be a problem to spend less money for the novas? My corals will do good?

Current USA just released the NOVA Extreme Pro - T-5s with individual reflectors so if I were going to buy a Current USA light, I would buy that over the older models without individual reflectors.
Personally, I have an Aquactinics, 48" T-5 fixture on my 75G reef tank and have softies, LPS and SPS. Great light and all my corals are thriving.
BTW, just because you don't plan to have any SPS now doesn't mean you might not change your mind later, So IMHO, get a light that can handle SPS as well. I thought the same as you at first but now have several SPS and am glad I purchased a light that can handle them as well.

You will need to get individual reflectors for that light fixture to be any good .

One and half months ago I replaced the PC's on my 90 g. "beginning" reef tank with the Nova Extreme 54wt w/ 8 bulbs. My Colt Coral, shrooms, zoas and ricordia plus few other softies have NEVER looked so good. I think it is a great lighting system. Runs cool and lights up the neighborhood! Wouldn't trade it...

The noves arent bad. Just cont confuse them with the good systems. They don't have the intensity. The models with the individual reflectors will be better but it doesn't appear they are using the spectral aluminum oin the reflectors so they will still be a step or so behind even the Tek but as long as you understand the limitations they will do good.

ok, gotcha so i should be ok with softies but for sure no sps, from what i can understand) Might buy these and just put some retro reflectors in down the road and of course the ati, uvl bulbs)
